women | Volume 7
This issue celebrates women – their diversity, their contributions, their creativity, their vulnerability, their presence, their bodies, their minds, and just their beingness.
Being a woman these days is certainly much easier, as women’s rights pioneers have opened the way. A recent surge in discussions around feminism seems to have surfaced in the mainstream. While the word itself may be problematic, what it represents is vitally important for both sexes and the distance we stand from it may be shocking for many.
The task given to It’s All Well + Good Musicologist, James Gledhill, for this playlist was to compile music by female artists, with empowering lyrics. A reminder that we can be amazing, wild, smart, or whatever we are and it is okay to have a mental-health day. True for men as well but it feels like women are so hard on themselves, and other women. The spirit of empowerment is to listen to and support musicians that do not use abusive and subversive language to wrap a beat and to sell albums. Let us not be distracted by a good melody.
As Emma Watson calls for a HeForShe Campaign, I hope that instills a SheForShe spirit. Gender equality is not possible when women do not support women in whatever endeavours fulfil them. Let us stop shaming, slamming, and otherwise being extra judgmental of other women.
