It is a gift to be in the presence of a brave soul, who defies convention and faces fear to live the life he/she knows he/she is meant to live. It is a visceral experience to even hear their stories, igniting something primal and something we have disconnected with to the point where tears come tumbling forth. To hear the story of Daniel Northcott is such an experience. The story of a starchild, who saw the world in orbs and spirals.
In 2009 Daniel passed away from leukemia which he fought to the end. He would have been 35 this year. But his journey as a filmmaker, as a curious human being, travelling all around the world, is timeless. Three years ago, his sister Erin, keeping her promise to him, crowdfunded to complete his film on Indiegogo. And now she is back. They have uncovered even more films, and feel now the story can be complete. It took them a year to sort through the newly found films and of course, some time for the family to decided even to proceed with such intimate and incredibly personal keepsake of their beloved Daniel. 3000 hours of footage! Incredible, right?
We are each other’s fate
This film is being produced by Elevate Films, whose founder, Mikki Willis, has a goal of producing “powerful, uplifting media for the world.” He has said this has been the most “heart opening” in his 20+ years of filmmaking. You may have seen Mikki all over Facebook and the news as the dad who let his son choose his new toy, which turned out to be a doll. Awesome, right? Yeah. Respect.
It is this attitude, a soft spot for a fellow Canadian (Dan and his family), amazing messages, and this indomitable spirit and passion that Dan espoused, empowered, and radiated that we are excited for the film to come out. If you want to contribute, you can find the Be Brave crowdfunding on Indiegogo. In just 1 day, they have raised 6% of their goal, with 41 days to go. As Mikki has pointed out, the first 72 hours is pretty key so please join us to bring out this film, to remind us what it feels like to live freely and fully.
To know such a soul lived and such souls are among us today – it’s you and me, too! – is a powerful reminder of the journey we are all on. We are indeed each other’s fate, Daniel. Be brave. Be you.
