We think of spring as a rebirth, a renewal, with winter, along with its cold, stormy weather, and hiding beneath layers and layers, leaving for a while, to usher in life. Cherry blossoms. Awakening from hibernation. Shedding of heavy layers. Readying for summer fun.
That is one perspective. Not everyone lives through harsh dreary winters, and for many, the season is the fall, rather than the spring. We can, however, all relate to a sense of renewal and hope.
We all have our own perspectives. The problem lies not in that, and in people’s insistence on their perspective being the truth. Agreeing to disagree, and truly let a sleeping dog lie, is not always our forte. Can sharing our different viewpoints trigger the realization in us that there are other versions of reality and that what we see is dependent on both the nature and the nurture of us?
In this issue, we explore different perspectives. Interestingly, completely by coincidence, we have Joan Jonas and Jane English, who hail from the same women’s college, visual artist Joan Jonas and photographer Rachel Jonas, two living in Vermont – Jane English and Rachel Jonas, storytellers Bernice L McFadden and Jane English…all showing us how powerful a story – through words, imagery, sound – can be. How powerful our imagination and intuition. Weaving through this issue is magic, myth, legend…otherwordly.
So often we discover more about ourselves, in the most unexpected ways. Sometimes it is taking a Death Doula course as I did, or wonderng about the lives of other people, maybe important historic figures in pivotal events, welcoming back wisdom traditions, travelling to the fringes of the world, just daring to be curious, seeing the extraordinary and never giving up…like everyone in this issue continues to…
